Hello Van my uncle and I use to hut cokeville wyoming but never really did really good did get some nice bucks but most of them were small. So we started to going to Montrose Colorado and then we started to get some really nice size bucks... Thats not to say that we did not enjoy cokeville wyoming we loved hunting there....

it is amazing how many people really dont realize how much work is involved in a elk hunt lol not like on tv

LOL...oh geez...it tickles me when I see a gal on tv hunting...their hair is perfect their makeup is perfect...lol...I hike or sit in a saddle for an hour and I look like I have been through a tornado...lol. When I got my black powder buck this year it took me 4 hours to hike from 10,000 ft to 12,500 feet where he was on an open slope above the timberline, I thought I was going to die! three days later I hiked my butt off to get into position for my bull, knew they were in this timber patch just needed to pick a spot where I thought they may come out to feed, calling them wasnt working as I think to many archers had messed with them so decided to just wait them out...and dang if the first elk out was a nice little 4 point about 20 feet from me...I couldnt pass him up and I dropped him. @nd rifle season was one for the books...we knew where the elk were, but hunted closer around camp to see if we could scare up a cow or stray bull, we saw a few just couldnt get a shot, so we made that 4 hour ride horseback into where the elk were, we got lucky finding them in an avalanche shoot and dropped my cow and guys dropped their bulls...took us all day to dress them and quarter the cow and get her on the pack horse we took with us so we didnt have to come out and get him...then back in the next morning to quarter and pack both bulls out...we took turns hiking out. No...its not easy! ...and have been told by many we are crazy for the way we hunt, nothing is worth the pain ...lol..but we love it and will continue to hunt this way till we cant anymore.

lol many times i have riddin for 3 hrs in the dark to be where the elk are and that is why 10% of the hunters kill 90% of the game I get my elk every year and people always ask where did you get them. Right behind the shoulder lol

Yep!...I hear ya!...guys at the shop always bug Greg about where we hunt...lol...they think we have the elk tied up somewhere...lol...but we spend a lot of time during the summer scouting while we are out riding and fishing. We use the horses a lot, but we also do a lot of hiking to get where we need to be...these areas we hunt we are getting to know better and better every year and how the elk move, but they still do the enexpected sometimes...lol. Not many hunters here got their elk during the early seasons, they were surprised at our success, but we always seem to get our elk. But we work hard to get them.

still was disappointed when I pushed a 380 class and a 350 class bull 3 days before to 2 other hunters and they got them so now you know why I am disappointed but i only had a second to judge him and he was running and he has big tops but weak on the bottoms

That would be a dissapointment! Biggest bull I have gotten is around 260-270, I cant remember...lol...hubby has one on the wall that is a 329...my goal is to get one a little bigger than his...lol...just dont see them here that big very often but have seen a few in the 30 yrs of huntin elk...lol. I finally harvested a buck bigger than his this year, so I am happy!

my big bull if he was even on both sides would be close to 340+ but he has a crab claw on one side but even on the weak side he has 48" main beam and 52 on the good side the bull on my profile has 48" main beams but he is not very wide but is still kind of cool I did a skull mount and he looks real nice[/quote]

I like the european skull mounts to...thats what I do with all the good deer or elk we get...my buck this year is the first shoulder mount we have ever had done, but I have two bulls and hubbys buck to clean and bleach now, and a big bear skull.

Thanks for the advice, where do you think I should look at going on a trip. I dont really want to pay an outfitter. To pay that kind of money is just out of my budget.

Have you done any good yet.

I got that 6x6 bull on my profile he is not what I was holding out for but he is still better than 95% of elk hunters will ever shoot. How about yourself?

I hear you there but some advice do it while your still young elk hunting is a physical hunt not just the hunt but everything about it if your not walking up your walking down and they live where you dont drive so packing one out is done on your back or with horses
