this IS what i do. 7-6-08 hit lake reese a small city lake that you pay to fish.upsides are few other anglers no jet ski's or pleasure boats. a big plus is the size of the fish caught from it.. first cast this morning i catch a massive white crappie weighed on my digital scale at 3-2pounds..one of the biggest i ever caught. him and 3 other bass fell for a lucky craft d-12 crankbait. biggest bass of the day was caught on a dt6 he weighed 6-4 pounds. caught 2 over 5 on a jig off rocky points.. nice thing is i burnt less than 2 gallons of gas and spent 6 hours doing it.and only seen 7 other boats.. dew point at 76 and a high temp of 87 made for a miserable day. the humidity was so chunky that the digital camera would not work.. i'll be addin more reports on here every weekend..
i was already to go on a 7 day fishing trip. when i tore the acl in my right knee. mowing the frikin grass.... the pain is unimaginable. i have had 1 mri and have a second one due for monday. the swelling was bad this last weekend but has gone down now -the reason for the sencond mri- they got me on some good stuff. but there is still a massive amount of pain when i bend it or try to drive.. as some of you know i drive for a living.. it was truely depressing having to call all the parties involved in the weeks fishing and cancelling it..something i had look forward too for 6 months.. i am stuck hobblin along on crutches-i hate crutches- for now after the second mri the doc will let me know my options. none of which are fun..
i am off to yankee land next week to spend some quality time with my elder brother and prehaps wack a turkey. followed by 3 fun filled days of potomic bass anglin.followed by 4 more days of off shore fishing -hopin for yellow fin tuna-
no computer for a week -it is goin to suck...
hope every one is being blinded by my new colors..lol.. i am one of the founding fathers of the yadkin chain gang. a loose knit group of tournament anglers who fish the yadkin chain.. we started this as just a hand full of guys on a web site. that went fishing one frigid january morning.. after a lenthy launch parkin lot talk we started this shin dig took a year or so but the last 2 tourny's the men in orange have held 25 boats have fished.. as most of us aint none shy we actually wear bright orange tourny shirts as seen below.. it was observed by a new comer that "it looks like convicts are pickin up trash at the launch ramp" during one of our weighins...lol..
with out a dout the toughest turkey hunting is found on public land. but here is some tricks i have found that work.. first off the amount of pressure the turkey get on public land is intense. guys are out messin with the birds a couple months prior to the season..
turkey get good at reading calls. so if you use the same old crow call likely he wont gobble..i use two differant shock gobble calls if near a lake a goose call will always get answered.. and the second one is a silent dog whistle..chances are turkey likely never hear either very often and will gobble at them..
most turkey hunters are out of the bush by 10 am here in nc we can hunt turkey all day long. i head INTO the woods about 9 am and get right comfortable. i call quiet purrs and plucks and no more normally hour long pauses. 90% of the birds i have killed come in silent.. now for calls i suck with a mouth call but a slate call i am very good with a pot.. i NEVER buy off the shelf slate calls.. all of mine are custom with exotic wood strikers-remember differant is GOOD- all of my pots are made by cutnrun calls a local guy with access to some wild exotic woods that he makes the pots and strikers from.the differant density of the wood makes the calls sound differant. i have a zerba wood pot, a blood wood pot,a tulip wood pot,and a desert iron wood pot.. again same with the strikers differant wood differant sounds.. for a real raspy call i use the zebra wood pot and a blood wood striker. for a high pitched call i use the iron wood pot with cypress striker. my favorite call combo is the blood wood pot bannana wood striker..that is what ya call a SMOOTH soundin call. this is a picture of this years bird with the zerbra wood pot and blood wood striker..
i fish at least one day a week, every week.. my choice of lakes are those on the yadkin chain here in central nc. my favorite lake being tuckertown. which is a riverine style lake. the in flow comes off the infamus highrock lake and exit's in to badin lake. the upper lake area is a shallow stump and hydrilla covered area..the lower lake is a deep rocky area with steep drops right off the bank..the lake dam to dam is 13 miles.. water color in the yadkin chain is dependent on rain and lake you on.. highrock tends to be from plowed clay color to clear with 3-4 vizablity -some claim this as stained- tuckertown is about the same. badin much cleaner lake average vizability is 5-6 feet. since by design this lake rarely gets all muddy at any time. you can find clean water in differant areas of the lake.. tillery the lowest and toughest lake in the yadkin chain to fish..the upper 5 miles is muddy to stained the bottom 10 miles is pristine averagin 6-8 feet vizability.. grass, weeds, lilly's, and things first off high rock lake. there aint any. your major fish holding struture is rock piles, docks, laydowns, creek channels.. the reason it is famous for crankbaits.. tuckertown the lake that holds the ONLY lilly pads on the entire chain-if they would quite spraying them- hydrilla rules the upper and mid lake creeks. in recent years the black alge has become a pain in the butt in the lower lake areas.. badin by name it is called asian day flower. to use rednecks it is just grass. but in reality it is a tough well rooted stemy plant that if you get hung in it ya got to pull the entire plant up.. tillery has some of the asian day flower. and at the big 24/27 launch it is about over grown with milfoil.. at every launch there is signs tellin people to remove all weeds from there trailers and boats before leaving the area..
