I caught a big bass four years ago in Virginia? I hadn’t caught a big bass since high school about seven years before [now 9 years]. It was a big farm pond and it was raining [one of my favorite times to fish I think cause it’s such a soothing sound and it’s cool and a little “extreme” or something]. I was standing on the up-turned roots of a big tree on the bank that a beaver had cut/chewed down. I was using a spinnerbait, letting it sink low in the water and pulling it back slowly, and I actually caught a small, 2 or 3 pound catfish on it, the only thing I had caught for about three hours that late afternoon. Two casts later, I felt a slow but heavy bite, I figured it was another catfish cause it didn’t run or anything: it just tugged slowly back. When I got it to the top of water. . . it went nuts and I saw it was HUGE. My adrenaline shot up, and I could feel my heart thumping, probably mostly because I knew it had been so long since I had caught a big bass. I finally brought it in to the bank and lipped it, but I was on the other side of the pond from the nearest building and I wanted a picture of it, of course. There were a couple of little empty houses/like duplexes that were being cleaned about three hundred yards around the end of the pond. . .so I ran for it. Fish in hand! Two farm fences, a hundred foot dam and a twenty foot high rock strewn wall later I was inside one of the duplexes and the cleaning ladies were just standing staring at me with a huge fish in my hand using the living room phone! I called my friend who was staying in our duplex on the other side of the neighborhood, cause my wife Kristin was out with no cell phone. I told him to use our spare key and get my car keys and camera and drive down to the pond cause I caught a big fish. Then I hung up the phone not waiting for his answer and ran back to the pond to put the fish in so it wouldn’t die, cause I wasn’t going to eat it. The rest is in the picture in my gallery: the fish lived, and a guy caught a bass even bigger than mine a week later.
