First time for the gobblers
Posted On: 04/17/2008 22:33:09

Well, where to start.  I've never done a blog before, but I though I'd try it.

So this past weekend, I did my first ever turkey hunt.  My boyfriend is big on it, and we both deer hunt, but he wanted me to try out this whole new world of hunting I've discovered.  Now in Delaware, you have to take a turkey class and get a license to get your 1 a year.  I missed the classes.  Therefore, no gun in my hands.  But I did get to hold the Camera.  (Who knew there was an art to videotaping either - I was given a mini class on what to do and say and film!)

We got up at the ungodly hour of 4 am to get out to the patch up woods where we had a camera set up the previous week and a lot of good footage.  The night before though, Scott was unable to roost any in the area... but we still had a gut instinct about the area.  With my hair a mess and not enough red bull in me to last the day, we set up at the base of some trees in the woods.  I had no idea where we were half the time... I just followed.  He started to call, and low and behold, ANSWERS!! I just got so excited just listening the whole time, I think I was almost hooked.  Now as I was taught... we had to wait till the birds got out of the tree.  We weren't too far from a good size bird based on the deep-throated gobble, so I was pumped.  Then this hen flew down not 20 yards from me!! Scared the hell out of me I'm suprised I didn't scare it back!  but it just started making noises, lookin for the hen (Scott) that was mouthing off before!  I actually got some decent footage on camera once I figured out how to use the manual focus!!

I think after watching her, I got hooked!  Scott got a great sized tom (24lbs.) yesterday morning... but I want one too now!  I know I should be so greeedy and try to go straight for a Tom, but that's the way I am.  Go hard, or go home.  I do the same thing with deer.  When I see the buck I want, I can't "see" anything else.

Okay, so back to turkey (I'm a little ADD).  My first official time out with the gun will most likely be in the poconos at my family house in hawley.  We will have one day to scout the lay of the land and look for signs, then saturday to hunt till one.  I'm pretty positive.  Scott begins the MD season this weekend, and then hopefully he can get one as well in PA.

Well, I'm not much of a writer, but I hope this entertains you and makes you chuckle at least once (if not for my difficulty typing on this laptop, then for my complete randomness and tendency to lose my train of thought make really long run on sentences!!!!)  Good luck to all you other crazy turkey people out there!
