I just got an H & R ultra slugger in 20 ga. Does anybody else out there shoot one? I sighted it in yesterday (1/21) and it is one sweet shooting gun. I'm shooting Hornady SST slugs in it with 4 shots within 2" at 50 yards. I am not the greatest shot in the world so I think that is good for me. I went with the 20 ga. to lighten up on recoil as I have had shoulder surgery. Can't wait to go on 1/26 to see if I can put a notch in the stock. Still keeping the 870 12 ga. with rifled barrel. Just want to hear from some other H & R ultra slugger shooters.
Hey Craig I went hunting with it yesterday and loved the way it handled as far as carring it and balance. About 15 minutes after I got in the stand I had three walk out about 100 yards but it could make them out but it was not legal shooting time plus the farm we were hunting does QDM and it was to dark to tell if they were shooters or not. If you shoot one to small you don't get invited back. I went sika deer hunting one time with bow. A freind of mine and 2 buddies booked a hunt around Cambridge and one of the guys couldn't go so I filled the spot. It was o.k but the guy had some feeders set up . The morning going in we pushed out one and then he put me on a different feeder in the afternoon that he said was hot. I was in the stand and there was no fresh sign around the feeder so I got down to look at it and it was full of cobwebs and god knows when the last time it had corn in it. I had a Blackwater permit for several years but haven't been able to go. I got remarried and built a new house so things are starting to settle down. The other thing is I don't like going by myself in a area that I know nothing about. Nice chattin with ya. And by the way the 20 ga. doesn't kick at all. Some told me to send it back to H & R and they will lighten up the trigger pull to 3 pounds and it will make a difference in your gruops have a lighter trigger pull. I did that with my 22.250 that I have on my own. I think I will get out my gunsmithing books and see how much trouble it is to do,
Hey. Good idea going with the 20 ga. I have a 12 ga H & R and it kicks like a mule. Don't get me wrong, i love the gun. I've always loved hunting with slug guns and its by far the best i've shot. I've been using Winchester Partition Gold Sabots and I have to say its truly a 200 yrd gun. I'm not a real long distance shooter but I have taken deer at 150 yrds a couple times. I do really wish i had gone with the 20 ga. Besides the recoil the 12 ga. is a very heavy gun. I like to hunt the marshes for sika deer and its a hard gun to carry. Let me know how you make out. Good Luck.
