Vanished? Did he? I hope not! But it does seem that way. A few weeks ago when I shot my archery whitetail I was after a gagger mule deer that I have nicknamed "TURBO".....He is everything you want in a mule deer.....tall, heavy, thick, deep forks, dark antlers, etc..... But I still estimate he will score well into the 180's if not low 190's. I set out the last 2 days in search of this buck to do a little scouting for next weekends opener for the rifle season. I logged 21 miles in walking/hiking and saw 19 whitetail and 15 mule deer bucks. I never did find Turbo or a whitetail that I would want to let the air out of. The biggest mule deer was in the low 170's that I nicknamed "Gnarley", a great representation of the species but not "Turbo"! I have my mind set on him! I was also hoping to find a bomber whitetail but the largest buck I found was in the low 140's. Again another good representation but I am looking to out-do my mid 160's whitetail from last year......I think the warm weather and the full moon had the big boys on lockdown.....We will see what next weekend brings!!!

While spotting and stalking a cranker mule deer I was presented with a shot at this nice buck as he cruised the river bottom. After watching this buck pass by twice out of range I decided to take a shot if he presented the opportunity. After moving to a bit different location he passed by on a trail at 18 yards. A quick grunt stopped him in his tracks as my arrow broke the shoulder closest to me and exited just behind the opposite shoulder. The buck was down in 40 yards. When things calmed back down I looked up on the bluff to see the mule deer buck still feeding unaware of what had just transpired. He was lucky this day but I have a rifle tag burning a hole in my pocket and I hope to use my archery tackle during rifle season to take him down.

I have been waiting to hunt a particular stand and when I get a chance to go out the wind is out of the wrong direction and looks to remain that way for at least a week! And to make matters even "better" I went out and glassed the area from a distance and watched a solid 150" class buck walk under my stand! What gives?! I guess at least I know he is in the area. I look forward to a NW wind!

The archery season has been great so far but kicking my butt! I found two good 5 points two days ago, hung a stand on the trail and felt good about the location.....instead of them showing up....two nice 4 points showed up instead. On my way out I checked a trail camera under my other stand to see a bomber buck posing for me! These whitetail just don't do the same thing twice in a row around here! Sooner or later though.......WHACK!

In preparation for the upcoming archery season I was out this weekend and got my ground blinds and treestands set! I feel pretty good about the areas I placed them in anticipation of a cranker whitetail to walk on by! If I won't be in one of these locations I will be spotting and stalking Mule Deer! Stay tuned!

Sweet success! After 8 days in the mountains of WY doing a backcountry DIY bowhunt I was able to fill my tag with a dandy 180"+ mule deer. I have been asked numerous times what has been my hardest hunt.....I would now have to say this hunt was by far, harder than any other and has set the bar! Pictures to come!!!!

I have been preparing for the backcountry mule deer hunt and I am leaving tomorrow! A lot of time and preparation has went into the planning for this hunt. I will have a couple of days to set up camp and scout before season starts! Hoping to catch it all on film! I will also take plenty of pictures along the way!

My next hunting adventure that is in the chute is a WY backcountry bowhunt for a bomber mule deer buck. I will be headed into the backcountry with my camp on my back to test my stanima for up to 12 days against the harsh elements that the mountains have to offer. With any luck I will not need all 12 days to make it happen! Season starts on September 1st! My ultimate goal is to come home with a B&C buck strapped to my pack! Stay tuned.....

On the 4th day of the 2009 SD Pronghorn Antelope season and the 2nd day of hunting fore me I was able to complete a successful stalk on this P&Y buck that scores just over 72"! I was hoping to find a buck to surpass my 82" buck from last year but with the antelope numbers down some 70% in this area I had a hard time finding a buck of that caliber. I was happy to down this mature buck on my second stalking attempt on him!

I was also able to do some scouting for up-coming deer seasons in the area as well and it turned up some bruiser whitetail and mule deer for me. A couple of whitetail that will easily surpass the 150" mark and one bomber mule deer that will go into the high 180's or low 190's. I have set a goal to harvest that mule deer this year! We will see what happens!

It is official. Antelope season is underway....I am headed out for 6 days to try my luck! It will be a good time and I will post pics when I return!

Just a little over a week before I head out chasing antelope! Although we got hit hard with winter storms and lost a lot of animals it is still looking like it will be a good season. The clover and grass is plenty tall which will aid in stalking these weary creatures! It should be a great time as I have a week off from work to go out and see what I can do! Stay tuned!

I am the Regional Pro Staff Manager for Montana Decoy and I am looking for a few good men/women to help promote Montana Decoy products. I cover both North Dakota and South Dakota. If you are interested send me a message and let me know. I will need a hunting resume sent to me as well in order for me to get to know you better and to decide if you have what it takes to become a part of TEAM DECOY!

A mature gobbler ran as fast as he could for 200 yards across an alfalfa field to come to investigate my calling. He flew across the crick and ran right into the decoys and I was able to put an arrow into him at a mere 4 yards as he was strutting amongst the decoys. The Bow Madness XS matched with America's Best Bowstrings did a superb job on yet another spring gobbler! It made for the most exciting bird of the season!

Although this bird brings about the end of the 2009 Spring Turkey season for me it will be remembered forever. Three weeks of hunting and 3 mature gobblers on the ground. It was a successful but yet the hardest turkey season thus far.

My blind was darn near trampled because I had so many turkeys come by my location just after they left their roost. I wasn't able to get a shot off because I was busy trying to get footage of the strutting toms. Needless to say they never came back and offered another shot so I decided to take the hunt to them. After a very slow moving, pressed to the ground stalk, I was able to zip an arrow through this gobbler as he went about his business at 31 yards! He was a nice bird sporting close to an 11" beard!

That leaves one weekend left and still have some unfilled tags in my pocket! We will see how it goes. Hopefully the birds will start paying more attention to calls and decoys!

Do you think you have what it takes to be part of Team Decoy? If so and you would like to be a part of the Montana Decoy Promotional Staff send me a message and let me know. I will fill you in on details at that time. Be prepared to send me a full resume and pictures!

Thanks!
