The kind of trap you are talking about is also called a stoploss trap.These are used in shallow water sets when drowning is not an option, made for muskrat and mink.The guard is designed to come up and prevent the animal from twisting out.That guard also makes for a nice thumb whacker.

Sorry for the slow reply.
The only thing in season now is beaver.I don't have any beaver traps out but I did do a coon removal for a families house in town.It was a good sized female (about15 pounds) with four babies.
