My Halloween buck.... I just got back from an archery hunt in SD and was rewarding with great success! On the 31st, early in the morning I located a dandy buck but was unable to do anything with him. I watched from a distance and quickly decided that he was the buck that I wanted! I watched as he slipped his way to his bedding area as he made sure other bucks knew he was the dominant male in the area. He freshened a few scrapes and rubs and disapeared out of sight in a small draw. My plan was to intercept him in the evening as he headed to his feeding area. At 2:30 pm I settled into a blind that I constructed out of tumbleweeds and branches. I used a thicket near me to break up my outline. Numerous deer passed my position later in the afternoon including one nice 5x5. I waited for the big boy to show. The sun dipped below the horizon and light was fading fast. I was contemplating going up the draw after him when I noticed antlers coming through the trees. He snort-weezed at another buck and rubbed a tree furiously. That buck made sure he got out of his way and headed towards the pasture. The big boy continued on his route and passed by my location at 36 yards. I grunted and he stopped perfectly and I sent a razor sharp broadhead through his boiler room! After giving him plenty of time to expire it was a short tracking job and found him laying less than 100 yards away! He is a 5x6 with a small drop tine grossing 166"! I will post pics soon! Stay tuned for other future hunts!
I took leave from work yesterday and went bowhunting at a favorite hunting area in SD. I was able to find some awesome whitetail bucks but unable to close the deal on one of the giants. I did pass up a solid 135" 4X4. I was unable to find any big mule deer bucks but did find a shed from a great buck. He is still there somewhere....I will go back soon!
It has been a good year hunting this year thus far. It will be hard to top the year I had last year taking a Black Bear in Manitoba, a 370 class bull elk in Wyoming, a 180 class mule deer in North Dakota, and a couple nice whitetail in South Dakota. This year so far I have harvested an Antelope in SD that will score high in the books and a oddly wide 145" whitetail in North Dakota that was in full velvet. Both of these animals were a couple of my goals that I had set for the year! Just lately I made one my hardest decisions of my bowhunting career.....I had a buck that I have been watching the last few years under my stand at 30 yards. I opted to pass this buck in hopes that he will make it another year. If he does he should surpass the 160" mark next year......but if given another opportunity I am not sure I will be able to pass him again. He is a beautiful 6X7 with all the features you would want....what will I do the next time I see him and have an opportunity.....I can not say.......
