Yep, black bears and they are everywhere. They are a nuisance. They are protected and you can't hunt them.
I don't think that's fair..Here in the Eastern part of our state, they opened a "bear season" on them, however, we don't have them here where we live....What do you do if they get a pet or even a child? Do they come close to your home??

We are having problems with bears now also. We can't catch any hogs for the bears. What a way to start the year!
OMG!! Are the bears eating the hogs!!That really doesn't sound good..Is affecting your deer also? We don't have bears here where we live, but,I did see a cougar a couple of weeks ago..

Your very welcome! Yes, we have a bad hog problem but they have gotten to smart to let us kill them. We have put up a hog trap but they are getting educated on that too! We talked to a guy about bringing in some dogs. I guess that is gonna be the only way to get them. They are just so destructive besides running all the deer off. We have had to move our treestands 2 different times because of them. How have you been doing on deer this year? Me and my boyfriend have harvested several between the two of us. Good luck!
Well Iv'e been shooting them with my bow,so far, Iv'e taken 11 of them and my Husband shot one during Muzzleloader season. We set our trap after rifle season is over and have trapped as many as 6 at once. Yes, after a while, they start to get smart, but they will come in after dark on us after they know we are out of there.I don't think they will all entirely leave. They show up when we start filling our deer feeders and they don't leave til summer. Good luck to you hunting this season.

Only a very small number of hogs in a very limited area and our DNR publishes where they are and the season is open year round, as in kill any hog you see in Ohio. I've never seen one in Ohio.

That is a big ass doe! Most of ours is around 130 lbs. They are not big at all. Especially when you are way up in a tree they look yearlings! Our processor is good on their prices. We have been having problems with hogs on our lease. We put out a hog trap and one got in it and tore it up. The hog had to have weighed around 400 lbs. We fixed it and set it back and caught 6 babies yesterday. They are running all the deer off. We have other places in the National Forest we hunt though. Hogs are such a nuisance. They are not good for anything but being destructive. Do you have hogs up there?

Hi--thank you for adding me. I see from your status yall have a hog problem too. Well we have them everywhere also. And they keep the deer away. I been shooting them with my bow, have already gotten 11, but that is only a fraction of them. We set our traps after deer season is over. Don't think we can get rid of them entirely. Well thanks again and good luck this season.

Y'all are tearing em-up!! We have a great but expensive processor on the South side of town that makes & smokes all kinds of venison sausage, pepperoni sticks, etc. & they charge an expensive flat fee for processing a deer but reasonable prices for processing the grind into various smoked sausage, etc so I like to go to them if I get a really big deer that is over 200 lbs dressed weight. My best so far was a buck that was 235 lbs dressed weight but I also got a ginormous doe one time that I didn't get weighed but I think she was close to 250 lbs dressed. I'm 6'3 225 lbs so you can see how big she was in this old polaroid picture.

I like all of the meat. I guess my favorite is the breakfast sausage links. They are alot smaller than the regular sausage. Between me and my boyfriend, we have already killed 10 deer already this year. We put most of it in the freezer but I am ready to take some to the meat place to have it processed. Hopefully one day we will get to come your way and kill us a big wall hanger.

Ohio only has limited areas where they need to do a little nusaince hunting/kill off a bunch of does and they're typically areas that are "no hunting" like metro parks and the rangers end up going in at night with search lights and rifles but they donate all the meat to shelters when they do it so it's all good. I like it all & so do my wife & kids but I really like roasts to. I normally process a deer or two by myself every year where I pretty much bone them out and do roasts out of the backstraps & rumps and then either stew meat or mostly jerky out of the rest because I don't have anything but an old manual grinder. I like to tak at least one bigger deer a year to a processor and have everything but the backstraps made into grind and then I'll make some of my own sausage or trail boloney at home using grind. My wife likes having grind to because she'll use it for spaggetti sauce, sloppy joes and burrito meat.

Do you make burger or sausage out of your meat? Still only 7 deer a year is amazing to me. We give so much meat away to people. We make alot of sausage, burger and cubed steak out of ours. We kill alot of deer but we don't waste it. We need about a month of doe season here. We have about a 10 to 1 ratio with the does to bucks. Alot of car accidents with them.

When I read you comment about hunting from an other page, I knew you had to be from Florida. Yes, I would love to go somewhere else and get a monster buck, but I sure love our season compared to theirs. How has you season been going. Get any so far. Good luck....hugzs Susan

LOL! No, we're only allowed 1 buck for the whole season and I can take up to 6 does so that's only 7 deer for a whole season max. I don't have that much freezer space to take 7 Ohio sized deer anyways. I'm normally happy if I get 2 or 3 big does or a couple big does & a nice buck! We can bow hunt from the end of September to the beginning of February but our gun season is only 10 days and for shotguns/slugs, pistols and muzzleloaders only and then there's an extra late season 3 day muzzleloader only hunt. The gun season is always the week after Thanksgiving and then an extra weekend, 2 weeks after that.

number15wins wrote:
One buck a day! WOW! We are allowed 2 a day. Of course they are not the size of the bucks ya'll have either. During bow season we are allowed to kill does and bucks, but during gun season we are only allowed to kill bucks. We have one week of doe season during gun season. I would love to come hunt up there though. I would like to hang a monster on the wall!
