I got my deer!
Posted On 12/12/2007 09:37:26 by quist101

I was starting to get down as the end of the season was approaching because it had been three years since I got my last deer. My grandmother was angry at me and the rest of the family because she was running out of deer meat to make mince meat pies. Man are those good! Anyway, It was the last day of rifle season here in maine and I decided to use my dad's climber and a tree that he had been using all season. I got up early on that saturday and headed over to my fathers land. My cousin was also there to hunt and we decided to use our climbers and sit on the back edge of the land and wait for anything around to walk through. It took me a little while to get up in the tree and the woods had become just light enough to see. It was very cold that morning and just walking to my stand sounded like a stampeed. I looked around and listened intensly for any sounds or movement. Not 45 mintues of sitting quiet I heard the first limb break. I starred down the long logging trail trying to see anything that might be heading toward me. Crashing through the brush came a deer. It stopped in the trail about 100 yards away. I pulled up my rifle and looked through the scope. A BUCK! I adjusted the scope and brought the deer in close. 1,2,3,4,5 points...NO 6 points! It looked like a big deer too. It moved to my right toward the thick woods of fur and pin trees. I knew that if I didnt take the shot soon, the buck would elude me. I waited and in the last line of sight I whistled. My heart was jumping out of my chest. The Bucks ears stood up and pointed in my direction. I aimed slightly high just above the shoulder. BANG! My first shot sent the buck to my left toward the clearling. I cocked the bolt back and forward loading another bullet into my 270 winchester bolt action rifle. The buck was limping now and I took my second shot. BANG! right in the lung. The buck stumbled into the woods and then I heard no noise. The buck had fallen. I climbed out of the tree and went to find him. I got to where I had taken my second shot. Blood covered the ground. I followed his blood trail another 20 feet into the woods and there he was laying dead. What a beatiful animal. I left my orange gloves to mark where he was and went to get my father and grandfather. The buck was a 6 pointer and weighed in at 150 pounds. Not the biggest deer, but a nice one. This is what us deer hunter live for. This is what it is all about.

I will have pictures of my deer soon!

Congradulations! Dry spells can make you think you have lost the touch.

Great story! Nailing him on the last day makes it even better.
