MaineHunters.com Pro-Staff update on Turkey hunting Season in New England!
Our crew has been pre-scouting since early April and now slamming the illusive and all mighty Eastern Turkey here in New England this spring season!
The season started with Steve Beckwith & Dan Rosa, taking out Dan's 15 year old son, Todd Rosa, on Youth Day in Maine. After working a group of birds very hard all morning, Todd finally lowered the boom on his 2008 season Jake.
Camera man - Prop-Staff Assistant - David Sprague , at the skillful calling of himself, called in a smashing Tom opening day of Maine's "A" season, before he headed into work that day!
Next in the Chopping Block, was Steve Beckwith's Tom on the third day of Maine's "A" season. Steve passed several jakes up to finally get to a shooter!
Russell Beckwith in Central Maine - lowered the hammer down on a nice Tom on the last Day of the first half of Maine's "A" Season, using his Pretty Boy to bring the lone Tom into range for the final smack down!
Jay Wagner Stepped up on Opening Day of the Maine "B" Season and hammered a real nice Tom, with Steve Beckwith filming and calling.
Steve Beckwith then put three days of Hunting in in Massachusettes by himself, driving about One Hour from home each day, to harvest two Jakes in that State. One on May 2nd and the other on May 6th. Hard work, and $3.61 a gallon for gas and scouting pays off! Legal Birds ... Fair Chase!
Dennis Theriault was on the phone talking with Steve Beckwith on cell phones, Steve was on his way back from Massachusettes with his bird, when Dennis told Steve he just spotted a nice Tom and had to go! Thirty minutes laster Dennis called Steve back and had taken down a nice Maine Tom the second day of the "B" Season in Maine!
Day three of the Maine "B" Season, Steve and Dan Rosa, head for a spot Dan had seen two nice Toms, the day before. The birds were roosted right where we went in to set up and they flew out of the roost tree at 4 AM.. we were busted. With that plan foiled, we moved to plan "B" of the day! This set up was in a field where Dan's son Todd, hammered a bird on Youth Day and the birds were gobbling at over 800 yards away. when they flew down all was silent for an hour. Steve, having hunted this spot for many years, decided they should move into the woods and down a ridge into a hollow, where in about five minutes of calling, we had three birds gobble at 100 yards away in the woods. Again they went silent until Steve spotted them sneaking their way towards Dan. Dan took the lead Jake at 15 yards away, to end his Maine Season!
