The Past!
Posted On 03/21/2009 09:39:08 by BOWHUNTER67
This past deer hunting season I set out to prove something to myself. That was to prove I didn't need all the latest high dollar gear and such in order to be successful. On my back I wore old Tree Bark and original Advantage camo.I wore an old pair of leather work boots. Without the use of any scentlock or scent destroyer. When it rained and snowed I only used an old military poncho of my fathers. My weapons were a 14 year old Martin Chetah and a 10 year old original BowTech BK2.I used only aluminum arrows fletched w/feathers and old Bear 2 blade broadheads.I hunted from the ground only, spot and stalk w/out the use of a ground blind, just what nature provided me with.I ended up harvesting a total of 9 deer,3 were bucks and the rest does. 7 in Tennessee and 2 in Ohio.No monsters one was a good 18" wide 7pt. Every shot was a complete passthrough at 30 yards or less.I used my grandfathers old western fixed blade knife to field dress each of the deer.I used a piece of rope to grag each deer out to my truck w/out the use of a 4wheeler or friends.I processed each deer myself w/the same Western knife,a hand saw,and a hacksaw.
Needless to say I had the best time and harvested more deer in a single year than I have in the past 5 years. To me hunting of any kind is not a "Industry".It is a sport and a way of life handed down from generation to generation by our Family and Friends.I admitt I am guilty of being caught up todays standards. But they are not necessary.
This 2009-2010 hunting season I Challenge each and everyone of you to go out and hunt like it was when you were kids coming up.Put down the modern stuff and go back and live the past,Just for one season.I promise you, you want regret it.While you are out hunting try to keep thinking of the memories from the past.I can about Guarantee you those Memories will put a Smile on your Face.
&nb sp;                         &nb sp; Let's try to keep the past alive!!!

Totally agree with you, I'm currently teaching my 16 year old son the ways of hunting the way my
grandfather taught me. Here in the suburbs in Denver, it is almost impossible to find public land to hunt. It so tough, especially turkey that we have to go to Nebraska or Kansas to find public land with good populations of turkeys. Here in Colorado the locations with good numbers of turkeys, you have to draw a license and it takes 5 preference points or 2 1/2 years to draw a tag. Anytime you have to go out of state the licenses are around $100 per tag with the options for additional tags for $ 20-$30 per tag. By the time you buy 2 tags for yourself and son plus gas and lodging. An easy $500. In today economy, that is hard to come by. To me not only does the industry brainwash us, but the states are only concerned with the amount of money they can collect for our way of life. I think it would help our society if everything was halted and we go back to the 50's or 60's. Your blog is very important for everyone on Camospace to read and think about themselves. Possibly our image in society would improve and there would be more ethical hunters. Thanks for making me think  about myself and how I need to proceed with the CORRECT teachings with my son.....J.D.

Amen,,, i hunt with two guys that during off season or right before,, we scout , looking for evidence,,i dont use a tree stand, have used a set up blind once,, i do have a nice rifle, but cant use it on public land,, home security is more like it,,, these guys that i hunt with, are old school,, you dont mess up there huntin, you find your own place, and go your own way,, the 2 have tree stands but seldom use them,,,the coveralls that i wear when really cold have holes all over them from barbed wire,,i wear mismatched camo, but do wear camo when hunting,, actually camo is my basic clothing,,,hell yeah, to the old ways,, i agree with you on thisturkey season is commin up in 2 wks,, you will find me hunkerd down in a evergreen tree ,,dont know much about it yet, but i'm learnin on my own,, am bringing a girl that has never hunted before in her life,, by the grace of god we will get on some turkey, have not gotten one yet,, maybe 2009 will be my year,,,good luck everyone,,, may your turkey season be a good one.

Coming from someone who grew up in the same neck of the woods as you, you are dead right we have taken a huge step back in the past 20 years!! Yes I do spend alot on rifles & bows but thats  basically it I dont own a climber, four wheeler or GPS! Most of the time if you catch me in the woods I will be in my work clothes & a orange hat or vest. I do most of my hunting from the ground. I have a few shooting houses for when I take the kids but thats it. Its hard to find a hunting club to join now if you dont have all the fancy stuff that the T.V guys say you have to have to kill a deer they will turn you a way! I to take care of my game from field to table & I think it makes you APPRECIATE it more!!  I hunt like I was taught by  older guys  I grew up around these guys are now 50-70 & they never turned on a  T.V to find out where & how to hunt & they never went hungry either! THANKS BROTHER

Amen! I have actually heard people say they would love to start hunting but can't afford it! Now that is not only sad but just not right at all! I tell them they don't need all that TV stuff to hunt and enjoy being in the woods.
Thanks!!It is the truth.I myself have thousands of dollars of stuff I never use.I can set some one up w/bow, arrows, camo, boots, etc.  just everything they need for under 500$..That's cheap.Considering a new bow just the bow alone averages 600 and up.It's rediculous.Take care and the best of luck to you ..Tracy

Your exactly rite tracy,,i agree with you,,,for one thing how can the average blue collar deer hunter afford a 400 dollar scentlock suit,,that`s crazy,I`ve managed to harvest mature buck`s on very small parcel`s of land and that requires lot`s of time and skillin tactic`s that to be blunt i really don`t see being teached on most of these huntin show`s,,i no we live in a democracy,,,ok,,,but is it really fair that the average joe hunter,,support all these folk`s so they can go to outfitter`s and film themselves shooting game....who`s really havin fun and making the money. I like huntin show`s that are more centered around the teaching of the sport and heritage.trust me i`ve tried lot`s of these product`s and they did not make me a better hunter..by the way you can`t eat the horn`s...how about the trick lenses that make those buck`s look big ,,what a crack!!!!anybody can shoot a deer on a game farm and or a bear over bait...
Man been there done that.I have thousands of dollars in weapons and gear and such.No more..Like you said we basically feed these people.Opening day Tn. turkey season last year I shot a gobler w/ my granddads old 4-10 single barrell.Next weekend I am going to have my recurve and an old York Bushwacker  compound I used in the 80's..I love Archery I try to teach it the way I know and have been successful with.It just all boils down to the same thing."It Don't Take Alot of Money to be a Successful hunter".....

Brother you said it.To the majoraty it is all about who has what any more.People have forgotten about skill and dedication. You put a smile on my face just makin' me think of the old days. Thanks for that.
