About three years ago,I had a huge knot no my neck under the jaw.   My doctoer was not sure what was causing the knot.  I was sent to an ENT doctor and he told me it was my syliva gland.  So they took out my gland.  After that my toung swelled and the pain was much worse.  Then they were goin crazy trying to find out what was wrong.  They stuck me with needle after needle til they found it.  They told me that it was a cancer tumor at the base of my tongue.  They said that they had not looked for this becasue it was not common until about age 55.  I decided to see another ENT at Emory in Atlanta, and he confirmed the cancer and stated that it was from smoking.   That was the last day I ever smoked a cigarette.  I started 7 weeks of radiation treatment the next day.  I also had three strong chemotheropy treatments during this time.  The doctors told me that the cancer was a stage 4, which is the worst possible.  They said that I would think they were going to kill me in order to treat the disease.  They almost did, however I have been cancer free now for right at three years.  They now say the risk of return is slim as long as I do not smoke again.
