Opening Weekend
Posted On 11/03/2008 21:58:30 by UplandSportsman
Well, I got skunked on opening weekend.  I mean really skunked.  I didnt see a single bird.  Saturday after noon at Bilby Ranch was HOT, about 75 deg.  The pup got birdy a hand full of times but I couldnt tell if the birds were running or if it was just old scent.  Hit some private land Sunday morning, heavy fog and real heavy dew.  Hunted it for a couple of hours pup got birdy once and that was it.  Went back out to Bilby in the afternoon, hot again, and Riley didnt even put his nose on the ground.  On top of that he wouldnt range more than 15-20 yards at best, he spent most of his time in the single digits.

Lastly, what is the first thing I see when stepping into the field Saturday afternoon?  Honestly the first thing?  A dead rooster lying not a yard into the CRP.  A full bird, minus the tail feathers, literally one step into the tall grass.  What a waste.  This person couldnt even give the bird to someone who might appreciate it?  Unbelieveable.

Not a good way to start the season.

I know down here in the Coastal Bend it was over 85 degrees at 9am, and the Ducks were few and far between.

We don't get upland birds here :)
