(My opening day 11/17/2008, LOL)
Well for all whose bowhunting opener was today, hope ya had better luck than me. Didn't see anything this morning, and this evening was just short of a comedy act.
I was hunting inside of large pasture that has a big brush lot inside full of pine thorn apple and poplar trees. About 30 mins. before dark I had two good sized doe chase a fox right to me. They stopped behind a big pine about 30 yds. away and there was a small opening between two bows ao I tried to squeeze an arrow threw. Of course I hit a limb and the first shot missed clean. They didn't move at all so I figured I'd take one more shot, making sure I cleared the branch this time. So I drew back and let another one fly. Only problem was that when I released, my bow string caught around the sinch on my hood and pulled it all the way closed. Needless to say, I don't have a clue where that arrow went. When I got the draw string untangled from my bowstring and was able to see again, the deer were still there so I decided to wait to see what they were gonna do. About 5 mins. later they started walkin towards another shooting lane that would have put them at ~ 10 yds. So now I'm at full draw and thy're only a couple of feet from reaching the opening and my cell phone rings. Granted it was only on vibrate, but I had stuck my car keys in the same pocket and the vibration was loud enough to scare them.
I decided I'd had enough for the first day, so I climb down and start walking back to my car. About time I get my stand on my back and start walking and here comes about 50 black angus led by a big nasty bull. I was able to temporaraly shoo them away so I continued walking until came to the edge of an alphalpha field where two huge buck stood only about 50 yds. away. The wind was in the right direction and the brush was high enough that I figured it would be an easy stalk. Wrong, here comes the cattle running full tilt right at me. I turned around to try to make em stop but the arm waving didn't work and they kept comin. Finally they got so close that I had to yell at em, and off goes the two big buck that unyil this point had thier heads down eating like they didn't have a care in the world.
Yup, I learned a few things today. No cell phone from now on, don't try to shoot threw tight spots and the next time I need to fill the freezer, tell my buddy I want a side of beef from that big bull.
Take Care Ya'll,
Pete
(FYI) The deer in my pics with the one split brow on the tail-gate was one of the two big bucks.
