2007 BEST YEAR IN MY LIFE!
1/11/2008 8:48:59 PM | |

Background on me, I've been hunting since I was 8 years old in the Texas Hill Country and South Texas with my Dad till I was about 18 years old and had other things I wanted to do besides hunting.  I'm 42 and started back hunting seriously about 6 years ago. I got a Martin compound bow about 8 years ago and man did I want a deer with a bow. My Dad traded me a PSE Elite with overdraw and I became a fair weather bow hunter. (I would hunt with a bow for a couple of days get flustrated and get my rifle). I had until this year flung 2 arrows at a deer (actually the same deer) and missed both times. This year it changed! I met some fellow hunters with the new job I started Oct.06 and all of them are bow hunters. They took me hunting in 2006 and just as I had always done I started the first day and bow hunted and then really wanting some meat grabbed my rifle and shot a spike. I received a little grief from my fellow hunters but I had some meat. Well, the new job I had started in 2006 had about 700 acres of PRIME river bottom land with deer and hogs like I had NEVER seen before! It is like TV, I like to call it HEAVEN. I had been told we could not hunt the first year I was working here so I would just ride around and dream. Opening morning of rifle season I rode the perimeter of the property and counted 57 deer and 4 of the BIGGEST bucks I had ever seen! I had to talk to my boss! I finally got the courage up before Thanksgiving and asked him "What about bow hunting?" and to my surprise he said it would be ok as long as I didn't do it all the time. I figured Tuesday's would be good. I'll explain later. Well, I was besides myself, I went from hoping to find someone to take me hunting to something dreams are made of. A friend gave me a ladder stand and I was on my way. Every day I got to hunt I would see deer or hogs. I shot at my first doe this year Nov. 17 and missed high. The second one I missed high. I missed 3 deer and 1 hog before finally getting not 1 but 2 hogs. I had 15 hogs come in and I watched them for about 15-20 minutes and really calmed myself down and picked out the one I wanted and settled my 20 yard pin behind it's shoulder and nailed it. The hog ran about 50 yards circled and dropped. The remaining hogs came right back in and I picked a red one about 100lbs. and wham I had my second hog. What I had changed from when I was missing to when I FINALLY had my first kill with a bow were two things, bending at the waist when I shot and aiming small,( a little advise the local archery shop gave me)and man it worked. Well doe season ended right after Thanksgiving and I never did shoot a doe, but I had been seeing bucks too just haden't had one in range to shoot at. My Dad sent me a climber right after Thanksgiving and I was Buck hunting. The first moring with the climber (I had used it a couple of times before... 5 years ago) in the dark I picked a tree next to a pipeline crossing and began to climb. When I was about 10-12 feet above the ground I remembered what my Dad had said you need about a 45 degree angle starting out or you'll be facing down when you are up in the tree. Well here I was facing the ground thinking this ain't right so I climbed down and figured I'd just hunt off the ground. I had does blowing at me from behind me a daylight and the woods across the pipeline came alive with deer. I was standing between 2 trees and not concealed very well when I saw a nice 8 point buck across the pipeline coming to the edge of the tree line. I had figured it to be about 40 yards to the edge of the trees. He began eating acorns and gave me a nice quatering away shot, so I pulled my bow back and settled my 40 yard pin behind his shoulder and released and the arrow went right over his back. Stepped it off and he was at 33 yards when I shot. Well, I had learned a few lessons this morning and I wasn't going to make the same mistake again. Latter that day I went out and scouted the area found some trails, went ahead and set and practiced climbed the tree I had picked out, set out some scent bomb and marked some distances around my tree. December 1, 2007 I got to my climber about 6:00am and up and settled in my tree by 6:10. Within 15 minutes of being in the tree I could here deer crunching on acorns. By 6:30 I was seeing the gray figures moving all around me. Once it got light enough I saw I had about 6 does and a long spike around me. I was going to try and take the spike when they all went behind me and I looked up and saw a nice buck coming in, perfect right to my 20 yard mark. I settle in and Whack, he kicked like on TV and I thought I heard him crash in the woods but I saw my arrow sticking out of the ground where the buck had been. I had a undescribable feeling I knew I had hit him but there was my arrow sticking out of the ground!?! I got my binoculars out and try to see if the arrow had blood on it or not but I just couldn't tell. I knew you are supposed to wait but it was killing me so I very slowly climbed down unhooked from the tree and went to my arrow and it was drenched in the blood of my buck. I eased over to my left about 15 yards and could see his white belly in the sunlight of the morning. A complete pass through perfect shot, I had not had this feeling since I was a child when my Dad first started taking me hunting. I had my FIRST WHITE-TAIL with a bow. A 10 Point!! So far this year I have the 10 Point, 3 does and 3 hogs! Best of all I should have 5-6 years of hunting in HEAVEN!! Oh yea about Tuesday's. I figured if I didn't hunt on Tuesday's I wasn't hunting all the time and was following my Boss' orders of not hunting all the time.
