Hunting trips

Took off last friday for a bear/deer hunt up north.. Dry as a bone and as you can imagine the dust was horrid. Took the ranger, and one other quad.  hunted all day and barely saw any sign. The brush is real thick and almost impossible to see into..  Some open areas offer a better chance when the sun starts. Saw one black bear out around 1500 yards across the mountain. Bit too long for a good shot LOL.. Only saw 10 deer the whole trip. It was nice and cool but would have been nice to see some animals around. We were hunting a  25,000 acre ranch and you ould think there would be critters there.. HA with this dry spell and no feed available the deer and bear are were just scarce.. Tried calling in a bear using a cotton tail distress hand call...and got it in close enough to smell his stink but sure couldnt see where it was...

Needless to say we cut the hunt short.. Wasnt enough sign to bother with staying any more days. We packed up and headed home..

So far 2 hunts 0 meat :( California odds are dismal this year.. Soon we will be off to Colorado for 2 weeks :) Cant wait!

We went down south for some A zone deer, pig and coyote hunting. Had a decent time, but was dissappointed with the bucks. Its a 3 point area and though we saw around 50 to 60 deer all we could find were does, yearlings and spikes. Saw ONE small fork.  Perhaps the 3 point restriction is so the wee bucks will grow up? We only saw one wild boar... And it was over 500 yards away and running 100 MPH ... Only reason we saw it was because we shot at a coyote and it was apparently bedding down in some purple brush, it woke up and was sprinting in all of 1/2 a second LOL... Wish we had been able to see it sooner before it was running scared..

My husband did take a real nice shot at a coyote pup. 480 yards with the 300 win mag. Excellent clean kill. Interesting that the fur was actually rather long. More like a fall coat than a triple digit heat wave summer coat.

Saw some antlope, tons of road runners, squirrels, and bunnies. Several coyotes though they are hunted hard and are very skittish and run at the slightest hint of something unknown. So usually all you see is a flash of their tail as they leave the country.

I posted pics of the critters we saw and the coyote pup hubby shot.
