So, some of the feedback I received got me thinking.
What is the solution? I think it is to get involved. I don't mean join DU (although you should do that, and the NRA, Pheasants Forever, SCI, United Sportsman's Youth Foundation, Delta Waterfowl, etc.). I spend hundreds of dollars every year on memberships and banquets, and am seriously involved with several of them. You need to be active and recruit new hunters to the cause. Take a kid hunting, even if they aren't yours. Write letters-- to state officials, local officials, and most importantly the news media. Your local paper can be a powerful tool. Contact outdoor writers that have a monthly column. Imagine my surprise when one day the phone rang and it was Field and Stream magazine with questions on an editorial response I sent in. These people are all on our side, and are always looking for the next story or event.
Patronize the successful programs for public access like Montana's BLOCK management areas, North Dakota's PLOTS program, and others similar to them. See the National Forests all over the country. I've been really lucky my whole life to meet the people I have and to be the places I've been.
Here's my key to success--- I don't make a lot of money. I prioritize.
I've never had a $200.00 bar tab. I don't bowl or golf. My house is on the small side-my kids share bedrooms, but they've been all over the country! A 2 pack a day smoker spends almost $3000.00/year on their habit. That's a new Browning Over & Under every year! It's an elk hunt every 2 years! I've made my hunting into a business, which helps, but isn't necessary. I'd do it anyway! We make do or do without a lot in my house. My new vehicle is almost 7 years old. 5-6K/year in car payments makes a lot of repairs.
Make friends. Help a farmer bale hay someday. Get involved. Go Outside instead of watching T.V. If everyone does it, it will make a difference.
Finally, go to the ScI website at www.safariclub.org and use the revenue tool for your state. It really puts into perspective what hunters and fishermen mean to the economy. We need to put our money where our mouth is and focus on what's important.
Until Next time, fight the good fight.
