These are forth coming events across the state in the coming weeks.

I have copied and pasted the initial information from the HuntingPA Message board. I have included a link to the actual thread in the forum so you can read the entire thread if you so choose.

Hunting and fishing are activities that require life long learning. In some cases, re-learning or changing tactics is in order. The following are some of those learning opportunities for young and old.

Enjoy!

UBP Deer Tour 2008 - 6-21-08

The UBP’s Annual Deer Tour will be June 21, 2008. This event is open to everyone and we encourage all to attend.

Mike Hancharick has agreed to lead us this year. Mike is a GIS (Geographic Information Systems) forester for Collins Pine Company. His job responsibilities include organizing and supporting the mapping and information management needs of the Forestry Department, GPS work, forest inventory management and data collection, coordinate the Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP), involved with the KQDC Leadership Team, assist in the coordination of Oil & Gas development occurring on Collins Pine Company surface ownership, and other miscellaneous land management items that occur on their forest. He is an avid hunter and enjoys teaching others about the benefits that a properly managed forest can provide.

This tour will look at the Kinzua Quality Deer Cooperative program specifically on the impact of deer browsing on forests and give the attendees an overview of how they can assess their own hunting grounds for the current deer/habitat balance.

We will meet in Kane at the Collins Pine Company office in the morning. There we will learn some of company’s history, things being worked on now, essentially the "Collins Story". Then we will head to the Collins Pine Company property within the KQDC area. From Kane it is about a 30 minute drive. Once in the woods we will discuss what studies are being conducted, vegetation surveys, deer weights, and antler characteristics on the KQDC area along with how they practice silviculture.

We hope this will be a dynamic discussion where everyone asks questions and we are all involved. It is recommended some type of truck or SUV be used for the travel.

The KQDC website is …www.kqdc.com

We will finalize plans shortly but will probably meet in Kane at 9 AM and pack our lunches. We need to find a nearby campground.

The UBP tour contact is Mark S. Hogan phone 724-643-6935 and email mhogan6935@yahoo.com.

NW PA Field Day For The Kids

At each interactive station, the kids actually will do something. They might be shooting various types of firearms or bows and arrows.

"The kids are going to learn about canoeing. The kids are going to learn about orienteering, how to handle themselves with a compass," Suriano said. "We're going to teach them a little bit of fishing. We're going to actually let them use the pond and the fishing rods, things of that nature.

"We're going to let them shoot the .22 guns, and we're going to let them shoot the shotguns and teach them a little bit about trapping. The muzzle loaders we're going to let them shoot. We have an air-rifle station that we let them shoot (and) an archery station in which they also participate in shooting."
