Opinions on coyote hunting

Hey everybody i just have a couple questions to ask about coyote hunting if anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated...Thanks!

1. what kind of call do you find most effective and when to use this call?

2. I currently use a .243 for coyotes but is there a better caliber?

3. And what time of the day is the best time for coyotes?

01/21/2008 09:59:30 Wel for #1 i would say a rabbit in distress either digital or manual. #2 A .243 is fine but i would say a .22-250 is the king of predator hunting. #3 Is probably bout early morning Midday Late afternoon.

always glad to hear of others who love to chase those pesky 'yotes.

gear for predators all depends on when and where your hunting. however, i have had some success with a few products and here are some of my favorites.

1.i personally use a foxpro digital caller with a predator supreme decoy. the rabbit distress is deadly in conjunction with the decoy. the predators are attracted to the audio of the call then switch to visual stimulation with the decoy. i also use a custom wood red river open reed mouth call from Predatorpros as well. with this call i can simulate anything from rabbit distress to a great howl or bark.

2. i use a ruger .222 but a .243 will do just as well. i prefer the smaller round due to the small entrance and exit holes if you want to skin or mount the predator. however, any flat shooting round such as a .222, .223, .22-250, .243 etc. are great for yotes. its becoming more popular to hunt predators with a .22 or the new .17 for the cheaper round and smaller hole. in that case, however, shot placement is much more essential.

3. generally, early morning and late evening are the best time to hunt but you can call them in at any time of the day.

I would shy away from distress calls if you can because if they hear the distress call they often circle downwind of you to see if they can smell what it is, so I think that coyote howles and yips work better and if that doesnt work try the distress calls. The best time to try for coyotes would be first light in the morning and last light in the evening in the harsh winter months, plus if theres snow on the ground it can help you see them.
