archer58inPA Can't wait for the late season. NANNY WACKIN" TIME
ABOUT ME
I live in a small central PA town called DuBois. My family and I live in a private community called Treasure Lake. This is where I bow hunt.
I'm Married with two great kids that are keeping me young and always moving. A son Alex and a daughter Alyssa.
I am also a SCENT-LOK dealer.
My wife is my rifle hunting partner. She really needs to kill something.
I am also lucky enough to Chair a Wildlife Committe in the suburban community I live in. We oversee a deer management program in an area that has only been bow hunted by a group of residents and guests for the last 2 years. The 6000 acres here has not been hunted for 40years until 2006.
Our challenge is herd balance. buck to Doe ratio within the area is 1 to 30. Not very good at all.
Our goal is to take 400 does and 40 bucks.
I'll be posting pic's and information that I hope will help other management groups. Fell free to contact me if you have questions about how the management program started and what steps we took to reach our management goals.
The 2008-2009 season was a good one in terms of doe harvest. Archery hunters at Treasure Lake took 150 deer , 142 of which were doe.
I may have been a little to ambitious in my expectations for the season , but it was a 53% increase over the prior year.
Penn State elected not to do their annual browse study and pellet count this year. Data willl be gathered again in the spring of 2010.
In terms of doe numbers, with this years harvest 355 does were removed from the herd , based on a fawn recruitment of 1.5 fawns per breeding doe.
Not bad in my opinion.
This coming year should show a marked increase in harvest.
I was able to get the board in our community to add a flintlock hunt for a limited number of participants. In addition archery hunters will have the availibility of additional ground. Our safety zone (in T.L.) was 200yrds.The board approved a 50yrd safety zone to cooincide with PA archery regulations. A lot of the deer we hunt stay closer to the homes for food and security. The change will allow us to hunt deer we could not reach last year.
I'm going out on my limb again and predicting 250 deer for the 2009-2010 season. Keep your fingers crossed I'm closer this year.
We still have upwards of 70 deer per sq/mi.
UPDATE: the 1st archery season in PA yielded 143 deer. An excellent number. With 4 1/2 weeks of potential hunting left for the year, the harvest will top 200. Of the 143 deer, 11 were bucks. We should realize a good reduction in deer per square mile. At normal fawning rates we have reduced the herd next year 396 deer thus far.
From my own observations in the field,I can see a much healthier herd and a definate tightening of the rutting period. Competition between bucks for estrous does is very noticable. It was not so last year.
Many of the deer taken were donated to local needy families and a local food bank.
I am SOOO glad the Cowboys lost. My boss is a stupid fan.
My Steeler's lost!
Have a good day. Stop by my page and add something to my guestbook. Cheers!
Everybody is a damn Cowboys fan...even people that have no ties to the Dallas area. Personally I think it has something to do with the cheerleaders! LOL! Have a great day!!
I thought I'd stop by and say hello. How's the hunting? Are you still on HNI a lot?
Geno
Hey Geno!
How's it going. Looks like you've had a good season with the deer and the TL deer program looks to be doing tremendously well. That is great.
As for me I had a pretty good year, 2 does and a nice 7 pt 17" spread in the 1st 2 weeks of PA's season. Then I started hunting Ohio...and that didn't go so well 8 days scattered over 3 weekends and very few deer & bucks seen. Such are the ups & downs.
I haven't been on HNI mcuh, I jsut poke in here & there. I've been over at bowhunting.com lately.
Good talking to ya.

Thanks for the friends request! Cool pics in your gallery. Sounds like you are a busy man with that deer management project!
Thanks for the add. Yes, the management hunts are like another job I don't get paid for. It's tough keeping track of 200 hunters.
Sometimes money isnt everything...if you enjoy it then that is payment enough...and knowing that you are doing something that makes a difference makes it all worthwhile.
It's late pre rut and all I can rattle in are dink bucks. 5 more days off. I hope something that we can score shows up. I'll shoot another doe for the team tomorrow.
I got my third doe for the team friday evening...I just need a cord to upload the pictures!!! My brother fixed my computer and somehow lost it
So far his rack is better than anything I've seen. a bunch of DINK boys and a 1/2 rack 8 and 10. I think I'll shoot the 1/2 rack 10. LOL!!![/quote]
