I've got a bent toward country music in the last few years, but I still get a kick out of good ol' rock and roll.

If you looked on my iPod, you'd find a mix of everything from African tribal water drummers to ZZ Top.

Here's some country for now... I'll mix it up later.

I couldn't list all the authors I have enjoyed over the years, but a few that stand out as relevant to CamoSpace include:

Robert Ruark (hometown guy from North Carolina)
Ernest Hemingway
Peter Hathaway Capstick
William Faulkner
etc.

Hunting
SCUBA diving
Hunting
Bluewater fishing
Hunting
Horseback trail riding
Hunting

Don't watch it much.

My dad and my maternal grandfather are probably the biggest heroes and influences in my life.

There are a lot of people out there living my dream, but I'd have to know somebody pretty good before I could call them a "hero".

Hog_Blog This place seems to just keep on growing! Howdy everybody!

What else is there to know? The basics are in the profile.

I've been hunting since my daddy used to wrap me in a blanket and set me on a stump while he shot squirrels down in southeastern North Carolina. The passion has been with me ever since. Moving to CA only cranked it up a notch since I discovered hunting wild hogs.

My favorite game is probably hogs, but closely followed by elk (which would be number one if I lived closer to good elk hunting). Deer is a standby, and pretty much anything else out there is fair game when I'm not chasing one of my favorites.

My recommendation, for what it's worth, is forget you have the .44. Focus on the bow, and you'll get it done. This is a great time of year to set up on water, and just relax until the shot presents itself. Archery is absolutely the perfect way to hunt hogs on private land.

I don't get down south too often, but next time I do, I may have to look you up. I like me some old scotch.

Ever hunted at the Tejon ranch?

Hi Phillip. No, I have never hunted Tejon Ranch. I was supposed to make it up there this weekend for the Hog Class, but it filled up before I could nail it down. I was set to go for a spring bow hunt there and had family obligations. So now i am planning on hunting the Parkfield area in October or November. Thanks for the advice on the .44 mag. The good thing is I don't have it yet. I have yet to take a handgun class here in California (I was born and raised in NY on whitetails and turkey). I plan on using my bow as much as possible. Have it sighted in for 40 yards right now and will get it to 60 before I go. Just have to practice, practice, practice.

Just watched the Quest video. Great stuff! I shared it with the Facebook community, too. Holly's description of why she hunts was spectacular.

Have a great week and yes, if you make it down this way, look me up. Or, if you go to Tejon and wouldn't mind someone tagging along to photograph and learn from a pro I am game.

Cheers,
Al

P.S. - Scotch is always available. :)

Hey, good luck in Parkfield! Who are you hunting with down there?

Lots of great bucks and boars in the area.

Thanks! I am going to be hunting with a relative of the property owner. The challenge I am faced with is that I will be hunting with archery tackle. I am going to be carrying a .44 mag as a sidearm if I bow hunt or I'll be using a 7mm rifle. I am a born and bred archery hunter so I am up for the challenge.

I loved one of you last posts about culling that big hog and how much work was involved. Maybe I'll get the chance to head north for a hunt sometime. If you eve make it down to the Long Beach area look me up. I'll make sure we have a 15 year old scotch waiting.

Have a great week and happy hunting!

Cheers,
Al Quackenbush

Thanks for the friend invite, and welcome!

Good to see another CA hunter on here, even if you are down in the wrong part of the state! Good luck in the upcoming season! I'm two weeks into archery up here, and have yet to even get out... too much work!

Haha! Right you are. Hard hunting down here, but a good challenge makes the prize that much better! I get your blog updates daily and appreciate your writing. Keep it up! NRA fundraiser tomorrow here and looking forward to seeing some other outdoorsmen. I just went scouting last weekend and saw a few deer, but can't wait for September.

I'll be heading to Parkfield in October for some boar hunting. It'll be my first archery hunt for boar. Going to be a challenge, but great, too.

Have a great week and good to see you on here!

Cheers,
Al
